As this new year begins, your thoughts have probably turned towards the future, setting up goals, making resolutions, creating commitments and vows. As time passes, these very efforts to move your life in a positive direction can begin to create stress, causing your mind to run faster and faster. When it gets to the point where you can’t find a gap or a space between your thoughts, you can be sure you are moving in the direction of more stressful times.
To find and consciously breathe into the silence between the sounds, whether inside or outside, is a quick way to redirect your attention to the steady, ever present background of life’s activities and move that background into the foreground of your awareness. Witnessing the partnership of sound and silence inside your own mind is a profound and direct arrow into the mystery of Presence and your ability to hear it, feel it, and relax into it’s waiting arms.
Take a moment or two and identify for yourself three sounds that soothe your soul. Whether it’s the cry of a seagull, the wind whipping around a corner, drops of rain on the roof of your car, the dog barking down the street, the giggle of a child’s delight, or the turning of a door knob signaling the arrival of your beloved, be aware of its effect on your deepest Being – like a soothing, quieting caress. Once you can hear this silence that cradles all sound, you have the ticket for a quick trip Home - any time – any where – if only for a moment! But it is these very moments of touching the Beyond that will sustain and nourish your heart and soul throughout each day.

With the arrival of 2009, you may be looking back and then looking forward, taking your lessons of the past to prepare for a better future. You may begin to sketch desired outcomes, strategize for their fulfillment, and courageously set out to face your fears and resistances. This can be a joyous experience, full of fun and challenge, or it can be a stressful experience, full of trepidation and angst. Either way, it is about gaining what you want or think you need, to make life better – for yourself, and perhaps for the world, It is also about avoiding as much loss and unpleasantness as possible.
The glitch in this process is the unconscious (and often conscious) belief that if you are able to ‘gain’, reach your goal, or receive a desired benefit or improvement, the acquisition will somehow improve your social status, your perceived level of intelligence, frequently, even your financial state, and most importantly, your sense of identity.
This highly influences the way you relate to the possibility of ‘loss’. Loss naturally feels unpleasant, but it has also come to reflect something negative and unpleasant about who you are! So what to do? Go for the ‘gain’ and feel somehow you’re not being spiritual unless your goal is selfless and altruistic? Or settle for things as they are, feeling good about your spiritual choice of ‘acceptance’, and simultaneously feeling a sense of loss at not working to fulfill your human potential?
In a culture as highly polarized as ours toward the experience of gain, there is bound to be an equally strong unconscious drive against the experience of loss. This atmosphere makes it doubly hard when wisdom offers the option of ease and peace with whatever has arrived in your life – be it gain or loss.
With the desire for gain comes the automatic fear of loss. As a human being, you have no choice but to experience both. If you are to live in your inner world with peace and ease, you must honor the reality of gain and loss as an interdependent polar pair while simultaneously embracing the notion that the results of this harmonious dance between the two is not the final word on your life, your destiny, or your identity. Rather, it is merely the flow of life moving from one shape to its polar opposite, and back again. This is the rhythm, the pulse, the cycle of existence on this plane. The ‘peace that passes all understanding’ rests deep inside this mystical wisdom.
Gain and loss are both yours to embrace. Relaxing into this Unresolvable Dilemmas as simply ‘the way things unfold’ brings a sense of peace and ease joyously bubbling up in the heart. Paradoxically, it also gives you all the energy, commitment, and focus you need to jump into the fray of living with amazingly mindful abandon as to the outcome.
