The Mystics tell us that the moment, the NOW, the Presence of Presence is always right here - that Presence is always available for us to access and know as real. How to find it? Take a breath and shift your focus from your thoughts and feelings to the space in which they're arising and passing away.

Placing your attention on the content that fills up a whiteboard causes you to miss the presence of the whiteboard itself. When you focus on the clouds, you can easily miss the sky behind them. When you focus on the waves, you can miss the wholeness of the sea out of which the waves are arising. That peace of mind we seek is always right here, a simple one degree shift in perception away. I invite you to investigate and explore what happens when you use the eyes of your Marketplace Mystic always just a degree away from the shenanigans of that feisty and amazingly complex personality.

Dilemma of the Month: Independence Vs. Dependence

Our Western culture highly values individuality especially for those of us in the United States. This emphasis on individuality often gives birth to an adoration of "the rebel". This high regard for individuality skews our relationship to this polar pair causing us to hold independence as almost divine, and dependence as an act of somewhat lesser beings. This results in an inability to perceive the strengths of dependence, and the weaknesses of independence.

When confronted with the notion of interdependence a skill fundamental to real intimacy, and healthy personal and professional relationships we often find ourselves in a quandary. Overwhelmed by feelings of confusion, we are left without a clue as to how to behave. What exactly do you do to handle the paradoxical desires to rely on another, and yet simultaneously be autonomous? How do you move between the heart's paradoxical craving for support from another, and its simultaneous deep yearning for a sense of self-sufficiency?

Managing The Dilemma:

The Marketplace Mystic understands that dependence and independence are the two sides of the coin of Interdependence. One cannot exist without the other because, in fact, they define each other. The concept of dependence only makes sense through the absence of independence. Likewise, independence only makes sense when dependence is absent. Together, however, they create the phenomena of interdependence that harmonious dance between the two poles that had seemingly been in opposition. In fact, dependence and independence are in collusion, rather than antagonism, and together create the possibility of real intimacy that rhythm of coming together and moving apart that is essential to all categories of healthy human relating.

I invite you to use the eyes of your Marketplace Mystic and explore interdependence as the larger whole in which your desire for dependence and independence work together. In a deep collaborative competition, their job is to guide your spirit through the maze of the personality's landmines and quagmires to the true treasures of your deepest heart Compassion, and the Love that is not the opposite of hate.

1) Criticizing yourself for making mistakes or not thinking fast enough on your feet.
2) Being angry with yourself for not listening to yourself.
3) Envying someone else their life, their career, their gifts and talents, their successes, or their physical form.

Remedy:
Realize that you are contracted and that contraction is a feeling in your body/mind. Consider the possibility that this contraction is necessary for the next expansion of your personal reality. Remember that your feelings are not the total truth and you are more than your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and mind. Breathe into the contraction and allow the tension to be there. Stay with it until it dissipates and deposits you into a felt sense of relief and an expansion of your freedom to be at ease with yourself  as you are  imperfectly perfect, or if you prefer, perfectly imperfect. And then - if you can - have a good laugh!

"This simple yet elegant tool for examining and understanding Unresolvable Dilemma is immensely useful in gaining an expanded world view.? Knowing, at the body level, that it is possible to survive and thrive while in the midst of paradox is a skill all of us can use with exceptional results.
