For all the noise of our Marketplace world, its voice could not be heard without the backdrop of silence. Once again, noticing how two seemingly opposed forces actually do work together opens the door to a deeper understanding of how our world actually works. This way of perceiving invites us to a greater depth of solace and comfort. So I encourage you to stop a moment, and listen to the spaces between the sounds. Within that space hides the silent reverberation of stillness in motion. Listen carefully. Your Marketplace Mystic has, by design, the ears that can hear.

Dilemma of the Month: Satisfaction Vs. Discontent

The desire to feel satisfaction is a tremendous motivator in our culture, perhaps equal only to our desire to move away from feeling dissatisfaction or discontent. We desperately want to feel satisfied and are willing to pay a high price for this state of being. We are equally determined to avoid dissatisfaction or discontent. These two drives, to feel satisfaction and avoid discontent, cause us to unconsciously make choices that push us beyond our physical, emotional and mental limits, resulting in stress, depression, indecision, and unhappiness.

We describe our satisfaction in a variety of ways: as approval, achievement, pleasure, happiness, fulfillment, contentment, agreement, gladness, joy, glee, bliss, delight, cheerfulness, or simply fulfillment. Regardless of how we describe this delectable state, it always accompanies our actually getting what we have desired, or hoped to receive.

When our dreams and goals and expectations are not fulfilled, we are met with discontent in all its forms -dissatisfaction, unhappiness, frustration, restlessness, displeasure, irritation, disgruntledness, anger, disappointment, disillusionment, self-doubt, disenchantment, and of course, cynicism.

Managing The Dilemma:

To manage this dilemma, bring it fully into your awareness and begin to explore how satisfaction and discontent are in fact an interdependent polar pair. Because they actually define each other, they cannot exist without each other. Most importantly, they work together to produce a significant component of your creative process.

Discontent is the stick that stirs the fire of your heart's passion, pushing you to move into action. Satisfaction is the sweet kiss of your heart's joy at the successful completion of your action, freeing you to relax and delight in the fruits of your labor.

Embracing these two drives as an organic unity, and accepting their essential role in your creative expression, will present you with greater freedom to relax, make decisions more easily, and generally feel more serenity. You will organically begin to reduce the amount of energy and time you spend, consciously and unconsciously, chasing satisfaction and running from discontent. Give it a try and discover for yourself the power of this polar pair and its role in the care and feeding of your heart's creative spirit.

1) Feeling helpless to contribute much of anything that you believe will truly change the world
2) Feeling hopeless about the future
3) Feeling paralyzed and unable to take any action in the present.

Remedy:
In order to feel helpless, hopeless and paralyzed, you've probably told yourself a story whether consciously or unconsciously - that is focused on the darker side of things and relatively depressing. The quick remedy is to take a look at the other side of the coin. It may sound Pollyanna, but it truly does balance out your perspective when you can identify the things that are also going right. That naturally leads to hope and then to a renewed sense of purpose that can once again lead to action. Be aware that for awhile you may have to corral your cynic. But even the cynic has to concede that in the garden, the thorns naturally come with the roses. With the lighter side in view, it is much easier to remember to breath and allow yourself to become big enough to embrace both sides of the coin  the dark and the light - and the rim that connects the two without interruption that place that gives you an additional overview and a much more grounded place to stand.
